Beloved pet dog dumped at vet after thief steals owner's car

An alleged thief dumped a pet Maltese terrier at a vet moments before the stolen car it was in was driven into the Parramatta River.

Police say the vehicle was stolen from a nearby petrol station, but at the time the culprit didn’t realise the dog was sitting in the back.

Nobody was found in the car when two police officers dived into the river to check for survivors, following reports the vehicle had taken the plunge about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The vehicle had been stolen about 6pm from a nearby service station, police said on Thursday.

Police say the lucky pooch has been reunited with its owners, while the offender remains on the run.

A crime scene has been established as investigators continue their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
