'Embarrassing': Bec Judd's 'Free Melbourne' T-shirt slammed
Bec Judd is no stranger to stirring up controversy when it comes to the content she chooses to share on social media, but her latest post may just have taken the cake.
The mum of four who has been liberal with her use of the ‘Dictator Dan’ insult used by those opposed to the city’s lockdown online, has now graduated to slogan tees that pack a punch.
The AFL WAG appeared in an Instagram story on Monday filmed in the bathroom of her $7.3 million mansion in Melbourne’s prestigious suburb of Brighton, apparently to show off her hair routine, but hidden in frame was a silent protest.
The TV presenter straightened up at one point in the video revealing a white T-shirt with the words ‘Free Melbourne’ emblazoned across the front.
The controversial tee unsurprisingly sparked a heated debate online, some slamming her ‘out of touch’ move, others applauding her for speaking her mind.
Twitter explodes over ‘embarrassing’ video
Many argued the wealthy influencer pleading for freedom from her multi-million dollar home in one of Australia’s wealthiest areas was too ironic to ignore.
Many reported they were gobsmacked over what they called the ‘embarrassing’ move from Bec.
“Bec Judd is genuinely so embarrassing,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Imagine post like 8 [Instagram] stories of sponsored content a couple days after dropping another line of $200 leggings and then wearing a ‘Free Melbourne’ T-shirt as if she’s imprisoned in her f**king mansion.”
Others put their money where their outrage was, threatening to boycott brands associated with Bec.
“Does anyone know which companies [endorse] Bec Judd?” one person wrote. “Just want to make sure I don’t buy their products.”
Others pointed out the WAG had been in full support of lockdown measures in apartment towers at the beginning of the lockdown, wondering when (and why) her stance on the strict measures changed.
“Interesting that Bec Judd supported the lockdowns when it affected low socioeconomic suburbs and apartment blocks but is now wearing a free Melbourne tops and referring to Dictator Dan from her Brighton Mansion,” one wrote, hashtagging ‘privileged’ as a kind of punctuation to the tweet.
“Sorry Bec Judd I can’t hear you over the sound of the 8 million-dollar mansion that you live in,” another commentator agreed.
Others argued her wealth shouldn’t impact her right to speak out against something she feels passionately about.
“So because Bec Judd lives in a nice house in Brighton she’s not allowed to have an opinion?” one person wondered. “Don’t forget she and her husband probably spent 20+ years building businesses and their profile to earn that right. We should applaud her.”
Others argued the response was way out of proportion to the T-shirt.
“Amazed at the abuse Bec Judd has copped for a shirt,” one wrote. “Most detractors seem to have a few things in common.... jealousy is a curse.”
Bec Judd’s controversial year
Bec Judd came under fire last month when she labelled Victorian premier Dan Andrews ‘dictator Dan’ in an Instagram story.
The WAG has had plenty of dicey moments online with detractors previously calling her out over he privileged position as a celebrity and millionaire.
At the beginning of the year when bushfires were sweeping the country, the 37-year-old shared a number of stories complaining that the ash and dust clouds stirred up by the extreme weather had dirtied her luxury pool.
She was swiftly criticised online over the comments as plenty of journalists and citizens alike pointed out the post was ‘tone-deaf’ considering the devastation the same weather had brought to remote communities.
