Batteries blamed for $1m Tas hotel blaze

A set of batteries is believed to have sparked a fire that caused $1 million in damage to a hotel at a popular Tasmanian ski field.

The Ben Lomond Hotel in the state's north went up in flames on Tuesday night, weeks out from the start of ski season.

It was most likely started by a fault in a cluster of batteries powering communications equipment, the Tasmania Fire Service said on Friday.

The fire also tore through an adjoining public shelter.
