To the girls and women everywhere who grew up watching the classic sports movie “A League of Their Own,” your dreams are coming true.

Amazon announced on Thursday that it’s picking up an hourlong TV series based on the movie, created by Abbi Jacobson of “Broad City” and director Will Graham. The series, like the movie, will take a fictionalized look at the trailblazing women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, but will not use the same plot or characters.

Instead, the series will be a fresh, modern reimagining of the classic film. The show will take “a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it,” according to Amazon.

“28 years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked. We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else. Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life.” Graham and Jacobson said in a news release, via Deadline. “It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.”

Jacobson stars in the series, along with D’Arcy Carden of “The Good Place,” Chanté Adams, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, and Priscilla Delgado. No premiere date has been set.

The 1992 movie, directed by Penny Marshall, is one of the only sports movies to center on women and remains hugely popular. When it was released it inspired renewed interest in the AAGPBL, which at that time had largely fallen by the wayside of sports history. The surviving members of the AAGPBL, many of whom are in their mid-90s, continue to speak at events and attend showings of the movie.
