Gabriel, Holder double-strikes put Windies in command

Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder both struck double-blows to leave Bangladesh wobbling at 92 for four in reply to the West Indies' first-innings total of 354 at tea on the second day of the second and final Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Friday. An enterprising 59-run third-wicket partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Shakib al Hasan either side of those dismissals offered the tourists hope of a sturdy response, but they now go into the final session of the day with Tamim (40 not out) and Mushfiqur Rahim as their last experienced pair to carry the fight. Earlier, Mehidy Hasan completed a five-wicket haul after Abu Jayed triggered a lower-order slump as the West Indies were dismissed 20 minutes before lunch, having started the day in the relatively comfortable position of 295 for four. Medium-pacer Jayed snared three of the six wickets to fall while off-spinner Mehidy claimed two off successive balls in finishing with figures of five for 93. Bangladesh, who were thrashed by an innings and 219 runs inside three days in the first Test in Antigua a week earlier, seemed set to capitulate in the afternoon session when Gabriel, in the midst of a typically fiery opening spell, snatched two wickets in three deliveries. Liton Das was trapped leg-before and the diminutive Mominul Haque's susceptibility to fast, short-pitched bowling was again exposed when he fended his second delivery to Shai Hope at gully to depart without scoring. Tamim and Shakib then counter-attacked effectively, forcing Holder into a succession of bowling changes until the captain himself was able to effect the breakthrough. Attempting to cut yet another short ball, Shakib played on for 32 and was promptly joined in the pavilion by new batsman Mahmudullah, who was palpably LBW to the second ball he faced. Like Mominul before him, he also failed to score. West Indies would have been looking at the start of the day to Shimron Hetmyer especially to lead them to a total closer to the 400-run mark. However the attacking left-hander could only add two runs to his overnight score of 84 when he edged a delivery from Jayed to wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan. That was the start of the slide with five wickets toppling for just 22 runs before Holder belted a quickfire unbeaten 33 and found support from last man Gabriel in putting on 35 runs. Jayed eventually wrapped up the innings by bowling Gabriel off an inside-edge for returns of three for 38 from 18 overs. Boosted by the swift dismissal of Hetmyer, Bangladesh were further heartened by the demise of the other overnight batsman, Roston Chase, whose struggles with the bat in the series continued when trapped leg-before by the inspired Jayed. On a dry pitch still offering considerable assistance to the slow bowlers, left-armer Taijul Islam kept the wickets tumbling when wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich fell to a juggling catch at cover by Mehidy off a leading edge. With ball in hand in the very next over, Mehidy removed Keemo Paul for a duck in his maiden Test innings, caught bat-pad by Mominul Haque, and then achieved the five-wicket milestone when Miguel Cummins was adjudged LBW to the very next delivery. Gabriel made two early breakthroughs for the Windies Mehidy Hasan took his haul to five wickets as Bangladesh skittled out West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, on Friday.
