Bakeries close after salmonella outbreak infects 15 people

The owners of a popular Adelaide bakery chain linked to a salmonella outbreak have revealed they are temporarily closing all three of their stores.

The owners of Angkor Bakery have stressed the decision to close their stores is theirs entirely and not something they have been ordered to do by the health department.

The decision was made on Friday afternoon after test results came back confirming there was salmonella contamination at two of their stores.

The result did not reveal, however, exactly which products are to blame.

The stores are located at Springbank Plaza in Burton, Hollywood Plaza in Salisbury Downs and Blakes Crossing in Blakeview.

The emotional business owner, Lakhina Eung, said the stores would be emptied, thoroughly cleaned and then renovated.

She said all staff will be re-trained in safe food handling procedures and doors will re-open by the end of next week.

On Friday it was confirmed the number of salmonella cases had reached 15, but it is feared this number is much higher as other infected customers go undiagnosed.

Eleven of the 15 diagnosed have required hospital treatment.

‘I couldn’t leave bed’

Coby Atkinson believes he was one of the people affected by the outbreak last week.

He is finally back at work after suspected salmonella poisoning.

“I couldn’t leave bed, terrible abdominal cramps, and at the worst I was just sleeping all day,” he said.

Mr Atkinson said he ate a Vietnamese combination roll from the Angkor Bakery at Springbank Plaza last Friday.

It tasted fine at the time but the next day he fell ill as did a work colleague who had also eaten at the bakery, Mr Atkinson said.

When Mr Atkinson visited his doctor he was told it was “probably gastro”.

“And then once I saw all the news articles on the bakery, I started putting two and two together,” he said.

It is the second time Angkor Bakery has been linked to a salmonella outbreak since 2015.

But many said they would continue to support the business when the stores re-opened.
