'Bad drivers' shamed for ignoring this basic road rule

Accident or not, it’s a road rule which many drivers seem to ignore much to the frustration of pedestrians.

Melbourne-based transport blogger Daniel Bowen has been sharing several photos on Twitter recently of pesky drivers breaking a simple road rule: blocking pedestrian walkways at intersections.

“You are a bad driver,” he tweeted next to one of the pics.

Mr Bowen’s frustration seemed to resonate with other people on social media.

“Every. Effing. Day,” one man responded.

Another Victorian said that he witnesses drivers blocking intersections every morning in Melbourne’s CBD. “Selfish and self entitled are probably more accurate,” he tweeted.

Royal Automobile Club of Victoria’s Emily McLean blamed the issue on impatient drivers trying to beat the lights. “It’s important that drivers know that a yellow light is not an indication to speed up through the intersection to beat the red light,” she told news.com.au.

Mr Brown accompanied each photo with the hashtag #Rule128. According to Victoria’s Road Safety Rules, reegulation 128 states that a “driver must not enter an intersection if the driver cannot drive through the intersection because the intersection, or a road beyond the intersection, is blocked.”

The infringement carries three penalty units, each worth $165, meaning drivers can be fined up to $495.

Meanwhile Queensland drivers face a possible $400 fine and three demerit points. While in South Australia you can face three demerit points and a $319 fine.

Driving into a blocked intersection is a $286 fine in NSW with no demerit points but it does carry two points if drivers block a pedestrian crossing.
