Backpacker hits back after job post flooded with 'rude' responses

A British backpacker has caused a stir online after posting a revealing photo of herself while appealing for work.

Teddie Swan, 24, from London is currently backpacking around Australia and for the last six weeks she’s been working behind a bar in a small town in Western Australia. But after Christmas, she will be moving on and took to Facebook on the weekend in search of work.

“I will then be looking for work, ideally with accommodation, in the new year,” she wrote in the Facebook group Backpacker Jobs in Australia. “I’m willing to travel anywhere for the right position and currently have my own car.”

Adding that she has previous experience in retail, the pharmacy, childcare and working as an ambulance driver, Teddie said she was “open to positions for multiple people” as she was travelling with her cousin.

But it’s Teddie’s photos that have caused the most attention with users calling out the backpacker for posting a picture of herself wearing a small black bikini and denim shorts.

Photo ‘sending mixed signals’

Many were quick to accuse Teddie of dressing “inappropriately” while looking for a job.

“It may be a backpackers group but when you’re looking for a job, act accordingly,” one person wrote. “Sorry to say but your photos might send mixed signals regarding what you’re looking for here,” said another.

“I have been a backpacker looking for casual work and I have been an employer of backpackers and from neither position would I do that and if she chooses to then it may impact her chances of getting work or what type of work she gets offered,” someone else added.

While others were concerned for her safety. “As a female solo traveller myself, I’d be careful with pictures like yours while asking for a job,” one person wrote on Facebook. “Be careful out there.”

But others argued that there was no dress code when it came to backpackers.

“Backpackers don’t need formal interview clothing for their positions, this is Australia and heaps of tourists come here for our relaxed, beach culture,” someone said. “She’s not going for an $80K salaried position.”

“She’s a backpacker in a country with beach culture,” another replied. “She will get a job according to her choice and her skill set. Europe isn’t as prim as Australia about bodies.”

Backpacker snaps back

Hitting back at the trolls online, Teddie says she’s been overwhelmed with offers of work.

“To anyone saying they wouldn’t give me work because of the photos I have posted, you would equally not be someone I would like to work for,” she wrote on the Facebook post.

“Just to prove all you jealous people wrong (I say jealous as that’s the only reason that I can think you can be so rude and inconsiderate) I am inundated with job offers in my dms and will look through them soon and get back to you all, so thank you all!

She went on to urge users to “keep the comments coming.”

“Because I only find them assuming!” she said. “Luckily I am tough skinned which could not be said for all!”
