Chilling discovery after backpacker vanishes overnight on Cambodian island

The backpack belonging to a British backpacker who disappeared on a Cambodian island last week has been discovered during the extensive searches for the 21-year-old.

Amelia Bambridge vanished last Wednesday after a beach party on the island of Koh Rong, off the coast of Sihanoukville.

She failed to return to her hostel, with the last known sighting of the Brit at 3am (local time) on Police Beach.

Her father, mother and brother have flown to Cambodia as the search for Ms Bambridge is ramped up.

Her purple backpack was discovered on rocks near to the shoreline and contained her belongings including her mobile phone and purse.

There was also over-the-counter medicine, a lighter, a watch, headphones and a padlock inside.

Her hostel was a 40-minute walk to where she was last seen, with no lights along the route, according to The Sun.

It is surrounded by dense jungle.

Mobile phone footage and photos show Ms Bambridge chatting with friends and posing at the party.

Her sister Georgie told the BBC the search party is now 90 people strong, with divers and drones now deployed.

“She’s my best friend. We were like twins, she’s literally my other half. We need to find her, it has to happen,” she said.

Georgie said her disappearance is out of character and that her sister had “meticulously” planned her trip around southeast Asia, which she’d spent two years saving for.

She said her sister had called her hours before her disappearance and said she was having “the best time ever” on her trip.

Ms Bambridge had left the UK on September 27 to meet her father in Vietnam.

The pair then travelled to Cambodia before Ms Bambridge headed to Koh Rong alone.
