Australian politician in hot water after filming herself while driving

A senior West Australian MP has been fined $400 and lost three demerit points for recording a video of herself while driving.

Nationals leader Mia Davies filmed herself speaking to the camera while behind the wheel before later uploading the videos to Facebook.

The matter was referred to WA Police, with Commissioner Chris Dawson confirming that an infringement notice had been issued to the Central Wheatbelt MLA.

“I ordinarily will not comment on politicians who get infringements of any type,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“This one has come out in the public realm so I think it is important that I reaffirm the message.

“When you are driving a vehicle don’t be distracted and don’t be recording while you are driving.

“So, my message is: don’t touch your phones, you have to only comply with the law and that is that they are used for voice and only when they’re in a cradle.”

Ms Davies told 6PR’s Morning Show that while she was yet to receive the fine, she accepted the consequences of her actions.

“While I have not yet received the infringement notice, it is my understanding that I have been issued with an infringement in relation to touching a phone in a fixed mounting while driving,” she said.

Macquarie Sports Radio host Tim Webster told Sunrise it was about time people realised that distraction is the major cause of accidents on our roads.

“The amount of people we see doing their make up, eating, talking to the person next door when you get in the car… this woman should know better, she’s a politician.

“You get in the car, put your hands on the steering wheel, drive the car and don’t do anything else.”
