It's not often that a resident is pleased to have their parcel delivered to the wrong address but this week an error made by an Australia Post worker had its perks, ending an 18-month-long mystery.

On Monday, a Sydney resident received notification the parcel they were waiting for had been delivered to their home. However, they couldn't find it after looking for it outside their property.

They decided to check the photo the postie had sent to them and realised the parcel had been delivered to their next-door neighbour's home by mistake. Remarkably, it just so happened to be placed next to something rather familiar.

"In the photo was my parcel, and next to my parcel was my now dying Philodendron [plant]," the resident wrote on social media, sharing the image in question.

The plant mysteriously disappeared the day the resident and their husband moved to the duplex, a year and a half ago. Amid the chaos of moving their belongings, the plant was left on the enclosed front porch among the landlord's left behind plants, while furniture was rearranged and belongings were taken into the property.

"We both foolishly forgot to bring it in and by morning, it was missing. We were both adamant that it was still there the night before... it had vanished within nine to 10 hours," the resident said.

The resident expressed they were deeply saddened when the plant mysteriously disappeared, explaining it was "a healthy one" unlike many of the other plants that they had tried hard to keep in good condition as a 'plant hobbyist'.

"I still feel stupid having carelessly left it outside, but I couldn't get over how it was only there for one night until it was stolen," they said. "[I] felt unsettled that someone had been watching us move the entire time... I eventually moved on and just accepted the plant was gone, until today."

The resident knows it is the same plant as it remains in the same plant pot — one which they hand made themselves.

After sharing their discovery online, many Aussies encouraged the resident to march back over to the front porch and take what is "rightfully" theirs, possibly even knocking on the door to call out the neighbour.

"The relationship is already f***ed seeing as they stole," one wrote, with many people urging the resident to "steal it back".

The resident confirmed they did take it back and was eager to hear "whatever bulls**t" the neighbours had to say, however, it's unknown if a confrontation did take place.

Australia Post responds to stolen plant

The Australia Post app allows Aussies to track deliveries and search for photographic evidence of a parcel delivery location and Australia Post is pleased in this instance it helped the resident find the plant.

"The AusPost app is free from the Apple or Google Play stores and we are happy to have helped reunite this missing Philodendron with its owner," an Australia Post spokesperson said.
