Aussies warned after tradie's $250,000 Bali tragedy: 'Don't do it'
Perth tradie Shane Ramsey, 30, is currently being treated for bleeding on the brain, blood in his lungs and severe brain damage.
A heartbroken mum has turned to the public for help to fly her gravely injured son back to Australia after he crashed his moped into a pole in Bali on Sunday, badly fracturing his skull.
Perth tradie Shane Ramsey, 30, is currently being treated for bleeding on the brain, blood in his lungs and severe brain damage after the accident in Seminyak – a highly popular tourist spot among Aussie travellers.
His mother Catherine said she's scrambling to come up with the funds to cover his medical bills — with emergency neurosurgery alone costing $53,000 in addition to $9,000 per night for hospital — let alone the $150,000 price of an air ambulance. At present the bill will likely be in excess of a quarter of a million dollars before he is in front of an Australian doctor.
She said doctors are yet to determine the full scale of Shane's brain damage and he remains in an induced coma following surgery, while doctors wait for his brain swelling to subside. Shane was in Bali to attend a wedding, where he was reportedly set to be a groomsman.
Mum willing to sell home to cover son's eye-watering medical bills
Now in Bali, Catherine said she's even willing to sell her home to raise the funds to support her son. A fundraising campaign established to assist the family with medical bills explained that Shane had no travel insurance, making the ordeal especially costly.
"We just want to bring shane home as soon as possible to be closer to all his friends and family," organiser Amyleigh Mitchell wrote.
The campaign has so far raised $74,000 AUD. But has a lofty goal of $750,000.
Catherine has now issued a plea to Australians in Bali, warning them to stay away from mopeds. "Don't do it, it's just too dangerous," she said.

Catherine said Shane's mates rallied around his bedside in the wake of the unimaginable tragedy.
"They've been his friends all the way from childhood, these guys have not left the hospital. They've been here 24/7, they're an incredible group," she told 7News, adding that Shane had "done a lot of damage" to himself".
"There's no question about that," she lamented.
WA Premier Roger Cook reiterated the sentiment after hearing of the accident, reminding travellers to purchase travel insurance. "It's the easiest way to protect yourself and keep yourself safe overseas," he said.
