More than 200mm of rain will fall in some places.

Eastern Australia is in for a soaking this weekend with parts of NSW expected to see a month's worth of rainfall by Monday.

The wet weather, brought on by a series of cold fronts and low-pressure troughs, began in southern WA, SA, Victoria and Tasmania with only a few light showers on Thursday, but heavy rain and storms will spread further north into NSW from Friday and into southern Queensland on Saturday.

The heaviest rain is likely to occur in NSW on Saturday and Sunday, according to Weatherzone, with concerns being held for the state's south coast and mountain ranges. "A focused stream of onshore winds could produce more than 100mm of rain and possibly more than 200mm in some places", WeatherZone’s Ben Domensino said, putting the area at risk of flooding

According to Climate Data, Wollongong in southern NSW typically sees about 100mm of rain in the month of May. That same amount is expected to fall in just two days. Severe weather warnings, flood watches and flood warnings may be issued for parts of eastern NSW by the Bureau if weather worsens, it's been warned.

Temperatures set to plummet

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting that Sydney will see up to 30mm fall on Saturday and up to 60mm to fall on Sunday. Temperatures are also set to plummet from 27 degrees maximum on Friday to 20 degrees on Sunday.

Melbourne will experience the worst of its showers on Friday with 1-6mm falling, with rain to continue on Saturday but to a lesser extent.

Adelaide is in for a dreary weekend with a high chance of showers over Friday and Saturday and a lower chance into the beginning of next week.
