Aussie grandfather's shocking find after witnessing girl struck by car

The 13-year-old is now in an induced coma after suffering life-threatening injuries in the incident.

A Perth man who witnessed a terrifying crash rushed to the aid of a young woman who was struck by a car, only to realise the unsuspecting victim was his 13-year-old granddaughter.

Michael Scicluna was driving home at about 4.50pm on Monday, when he saw a yellow MG3 hatch collide with the teen girl at an intersection near his Perth home and parked his car "too see if anyone needed help".

"There was a person on the ground messed up and a young girl crying. I looked up at her and knew who she was," he told the West Australian.

"Is this Shaylee?" he asked, referring to the person on the ground, to which the crying girl confirmed his dread. It was his granddaughter Shaylee Kelton who had been severely struck.

“I didn’t recognise her, her hair was all over her face... I was in shock. She was lying on her side. I thought she was dead," he told the publication.

However when she started "coughing up blood" he "knew she was alive." The teen was then rushed to Royal Perth Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

How did it happen?

Shaylee, who lives with her grandfather, had apparently been with her friend when they were about to run across the road to an IGA supermarket. However when the P-plate driver approached, her friend stopped, but Shaylee didn't. The girl seemingly didn't see the car coming, which the driver reportedly thought she did.

"There was no screech of tyres or anything. There was just a bang," a witness who heard the sound from inside his home told the West Australian, after which he immediately called emergency services.

Mr Scicluna said he and the rest of the family don't blame the driver, who was very emotional at the scene.

"It was an accident, kids are kids, it happens too often," he said to Nine News. "Kids just have to be wary and be more vigilant on the roads."

Perth teen in induced coma, family wait for news
