Aussie dad, 26, fighting for life after horrific accident in Bali

The former soldier's family are now on a desperate mission to bring him home.

The family of a young Queensland dad who has had half of his skull removed after a horrific motorcycle crash while on holiday in Bali are on an urgent mission to bring their boy home.

Remuna Avaemai was enjoying a “quick break in between jobs” when he was involved in a catastrophic accident on Friday, his former partner Meg Sproule, with whom he shares a daughter, told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The 26-year-old suffered a serious brain injury that required surgery and remains on life support in an induced coma, the mum revealed on a GoFundMe page she created over the weekend.

“We don’t know what the outcome is going to be as of yet; however we want him to receive the best possible care whilst in Bali,” she said. “Due to Remuna being in a critical condition, he is too unwell to meet the criteria to be flown home by a critical care team at this stage.”

Ms Sproule told the Gold Coast Bulletin Mr Avaemai’s family want nothing more than to bring him back home, but have been told it will cost up to $180,000 by medical authorities. Local company Medical Rescue have reportedly agreed to help coordinate the transfer when he is stable enough.

“We really want to try and be with him and push him through this so he can see his daughter,” the heartbroken mum said, describing her little girl’s connection with her dad as “very unique”. “The only thing he would want is to feel her presence and hear her words.”

'Time is vital' to save former soldier

Mr Avaemai, a former Australian soldier who served in Afghanistan, needs another surgery to have his damaged skull restored. However, his family are hopeful he will pull through after the 26-year-old squeezed his brother’s hand during a recent visit.

“Remuna is the toughest person ever. He has fought overseas and he has been devoted to the army,” Ms Sproule told the publication. “We just want as many people to support him the way he goes and supports everyone in the world.”

In an update on Saturday, the mum thanked everyone for their “support and warmth”. “We want Remuna to see his little girl again and wake up,” she said on Facebook.

So far the GoFundMe has raised more than $33,000, with the hopes of raising $100,000 to pay for Mr Avaemai’s medical expenses. “Time is vital and all help is truly appreciated. This is critical,” Ms Sproule said.
