Australia Post is gearing up for a monster Christmas – and in order to prepare for the seasonal rush, the national postal service is looking to hire 3,700 new Aussies.

“To help support the business during the festive season this year, 2,500 Christmas casuals will be hired across processing and transport,” Australia Post said in a statement.

“There will also be an additional 1,200 fixed term roles available to serve customers in Post Offices, customer contact centres and across the delivery network.”

Roles range from transport, delivery and retail/customer service to office-based positions such as sales and marketing or digital.

While many of the jobs are based in Melbourne and Sydney, there are also roles distributed across various states.

Australia Post delivered 40 million parcels last December, an 11 per cent jump from 2017. On one single day, 3 million parcels were sent.

Australia Post group CEO and managing director Christine Holgate said the hiring spree was “record-breaking” and that this Christmas was set to be “the biggest … in Australia Post’s history”.

“Online purchases hit a record $27.5 billion in 2018, and upcoming online shopping sales like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Singles Day are set to be bigger than ever,” she said.

“Together with traditional greeting cards, we are gearing up for a big Christmas rush.”

Christmas will see services operational for longer than usual, Holgate added.

“We know our customers want their online purchases delivered safely and quickly, which is why we’ll have more people in our facilities, more vehicles on the roads, and our Post Offices open for extended trading hours from 25 November,” she said.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts Paul Fletcher said it was good to see the postal service create jobs for the festive season.

“It’s an important initiative to assist with the timely delivery of parcels and greeting cards when volumes hit record highs and many Australians are keeping a close eye on the mailbox for Christmas deliveries.”

Yahoo Finance understands that not all 3,700 vacancies have been immediately posted; hiring will come in clusters, with more job listings made online closer to December.
