Asaleo Care's(ASX:AHY) Share Price Is Down 43% Over The Past Five Years.

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But even the best stock picker will only win with some selections. So we wouldn't blame long term Asaleo Care Limited (ASX:AHY) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 43% over a half decade. Unhappily, the share price slid 3.8% in the last week.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Looking back five years, both Asaleo Care's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 11% per year. In this case, the EPS change is really very close to the share price drop of 11% a year. This suggests that market participants have not changed their view of the company all that much. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Asaleo Care the TSR over the last 5 years was -32%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Asaleo Care has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 11% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 6% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
