Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says he is "not surprised" that David Luiz looks set for an Arsenal exit, adding the north London club are particularly excited by William Saliba's arrival.

Arsenal signed Luiz last summer for just £8million from London rivals Chelsea on an initial 12- month contract that included an option for a one-year extension.

With the Premier League set to finish after Luiz's contract expires, Standard Sport understands the Gunners are hoping to extend the 33-year-old's deal at least in the short-term.

While Arsenal are yet to exercise that extension - of which they only have until June 23 - Carragher insists an exit would not come as a shock.

He told Sky Sports: "We know he can lack concentration and make poor decisions and that's cost certain teams. That's why he's moved on in his career.

"I know Arsenal are really excited about the prospect of Saliba coming in who will be joining next season. He's only 19, so I still think they need a little bit more experience in that position.

"To be honest, it's no surprise they won't be renewing David Luiz's contract."

Luiz has been a regular starter for both Mikel Arteta and previous boss Unai Emery, but his best years certainly came in a Chelsea shirt.

Across two periods with the club, the Brazilian won the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League.

Of Luiz's career, Carragher added: "It's been entertaining although maybe that's something you don't want to be described about as a defender really.

"He's not going to change how he plays - no manager's going to change David Luiz. He's had success through his career, he's went for big money, he's got great qualities.

"I think of him at his best in the middle of a back three under [Antonio] Conte the year they won the title and I think that was the best position for him."
