A man has been arrested after a driver was slashed with a knife in a failed carjacking in Melbourne's southwest.

The 25-year-old Muckatah man was arrested near the Princes Highway about 10am on Wednesday following an earlier stabbing incident.

Police say a 33-year-old Glenroy man parked at the Hoppers Crossing railway station just after 6.30am when another man threatened him with a knife and made demands for his car.

The victim refused and received a slash wound to his leg before the offender fled.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and the arrested man is assisting police with their investigation.
