Appeal for witnesses after attempted abduction of nine-year-old schoolgirl

Police have made a fresh appeal for witnesses after the attempted abduction of a schoolgirl in Melbourne.

Detectives have released pictures of a suspect who attempted to abduct the girl near a Mernda primary school around 8.30am on Wednesday.

Footage shows the nine-year-old girl running away from the scene after being confronted by a man who told her he had a knife and convinced her to walk with him.

“The sooner we can solve this and get to the bottom of what happened the sooner we can put the community’s mind at ease,” Detective Sergeant Peter Turner said.

Officers have already questioned a man who was later released.

Police are now calling for anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.
