A female Liberal politician under threat of a challenge by a male real estate agent appears to have the backing of her federal colleagues.
NSW south coast MP Ann Sudmalis is facing a battle against local real estate agent Grant Schultz to re-run in her seat of Gilmore at the next election.
Liberal frontbencher Zed Seselja hopes she can fend off the pre-selection challenge, in the wake of assistant minister Jane Prentice's pre-selection loss to a male Brisbane City councillor.
"I would want to see (Ann) go to the next election and win and it's a hard seat," he told Sky News on Thursday.
"You want to see someone who's performed really well, as Ann has, continue and I would be very hopeful that would be the case."
Treasurer Scott Morrison is making the journey to Ms Sudmalis' marginal electorate where the pair will hold a press conference on Thursday.
The loss of Ms Prentice has been decried by many Liberal party members, including Minister for Women Kelly O'Dwyer who this week pledged $50,000 to a fund aimed at increasing the number of female coalition MPs.
Ms Prentice has held the Queensland seat of Ryan for the LNP since 2010.
Following her dumping by branch members, she will be replaced by Julian Simmonds at the next federal election
