Strange 'dinosaur-like' creature caught on fishing trip

A fisherman has reeled in a bizarre “dinosaur-like” fish with gigantic eyes from the dark depths of the Norwegian Sea.

Oscar Lundahl, 19, was fishing off the island of Andoya in northern Norway when he pulled in the strange-looking creature.

He told The Sun that he nearly jumped out of his boat when he first laid eyes on the fish.

"It was pretty amazing. I have never seen anything like it before. It just looked weird, a bit dinosaur-like,” he said.

Mr Lundahl, who works as a fishing guide for Nordic Sea Angling, was out fishing for blue halibut when he made the catch.

He said it took him about half an hour to reel in the fish from 800 metres deep.

And while he was oblivious over its true identity, his colleague was quick to identify it as a ratfish.

Ratfish are related to sharks and spend most their time on the ocean floor, meaning they are rarely caught, according to Oceana.

It is believed their large eyes have developed over millions of years to help them see in dark depths.

Mr Lundahl said the fish didn’t survive the pressure change, prompting him to take it home and cook it for dinner.

"Despite its ugly appearance it was really tasty. It is a bit like cod but tastier,” he revealed.

Just last month, an angler’s catch in New York went viral for appearing to have two mouths.
