Amateur thieves pose as police officers to rob shopkeeper

Two amateur thieves posing as police officers have bashed and robbed a shopkeeper in Sydney’s southwest.

The pair, one waving a fake police badge and the other wearing a suit and sunglasses, were seen walking into a Campsie store on Thursday about 7.30pm.

One of them is seen on security vision waving his badge at the shopkeeper, who stands behind the counter.

They demand $2000 from him, telling the man they’re the police.

When he refuses, things turn violent. He’s assaulted and his gold necklace, a wedding gift worth thousands, is stolen.

He’s left nursing a cut to his face.

The victim’s brother said he hopes the pair are caught.

“It’s terrible. Nine years. We opened the shop nine years (ago) – it’s the first time (we’ve been robbed),” he said.

Neighbour Tony Tang said the news of the robbery is “pretty sad” as the shopkeeper is “a nice guy”.

NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Paul Albury described the robbery and thieves impersonating officers as “disgusting”.

However, these fake cops have made it easier for the real police to track them down.

Not only did they show their faces to the cameras, but they also left behind a wealth of forensic evidence, including fingerprints on the counter.
