Amandaland stars reveal set blew away in high winds

Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch were filming a car boot sale scene when the weather turned

Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch have revealed the entire set of their upcoming series, Amandaland, blew away in bad weather.

The actors are starring in the spin-off of Motherland, which followed mum Julia Johnstone (Anna Maxwell Martin) as she tried to juggle her career and looking after her young children. They are reprising the roles of snobby school mum Amanda (Punch) and her mum Felicity (Lumley).

The pair were on The One Show on Wednesday, 22 January and told how there was a hiccup during filming when the wind picked up and sent everything flying.

Punch and Lumley were shooting an outdoor scene when the wind started up. “The set blew away,” said Punch, as Lumley chimed in: “The whole thing!”

“We were doing a car boot sale and the weather turned and the entire set just blew off,” Punch went on.

Lumley admitted the whole thing “was funny”.

“All the bits, all the bits and pieces and table flew over and everything… sort of holding your hair in place and everything,” she laughed. patting her blonde bob.

Motherland first aired in 2016 and ran for three seasons, with the last on in 2021. It returned for a Christmas special in 2022, then in May 2024 it was confirmed that a spin-off focusing on catty Amanda was in the pipeline.

The new show will follow Amanda after her divorce, as she downsizes and moves house and starts over with her children.

Punch revealed that the spin-off will see some changes in Amanda’s sometimes prickly relationship with her mother, as the pair now “need each other” more. “There is softer moments,” she said. “There is still the back handed compliments."

“Still the odd digs and things like that but it’s much more affectionate,” Lumley added.

“It’s very touching too,” Lumley went on. “It has got really touching little moments in it.

"Also at the readthrough I was crying, I literally cried with laughter, I was crying with laughter. The writing is out of this world.”

“Work is work but if it is with beautiful people and adorable things it’s a pleasure,” said the Absolutely Fabulous star.

Amandaland airs at 9pm on BBC One on 5 February. Motherland is available on the iPlayer.
