WA car jacking turns into dramatic citizen's arrest

An alleged carjacker’s rampage in a quiet WA town came to a dramatic end when the suspect was apprehended by the vehicle’s owner and several stunned bystanders.

Terrifying footage shows the alleged thief refusing to leave a stolen Holden Commodore in Toodyay, 80km northeast of Perth, at about 4pm on Wednesday after it had collided with a Ford Ranger, Nine News reported.

The red ute was left temporarily unlocked outside an auto mechanic when it was allegedly stolen by the man, Perth Now reported.

The owner quickly rushed over and tried to open the driver’s door but the car sped off before crashing into the white 4WD, police say.

The owner and another man tried to force the alleged thief out of the vehicle but had little success.

The man behind the wheel managed to accelerate away once more, allegedly ramming another car.

In a drastic attempt to bring an end to the carnage, the owner began smashing the ute’s windows with a pole.

The driver then fled the vehicle but was quickly apprehended by the owner and four other men in a dramatic citizens’ arrest.

Police rushed to the scene where the man, 24, was taken to hospital and later charged with multiple offences.

He is due to appear at Northam Magistrate’s Court next month.
