Alleged cellphone video incident in Sask. hockey locker room under investigation by independent body
Hockey Saskatchewan has confirmed that an allegation of a cellphone incident in a locker room from October is under investigation.
Hockey Canada's independent third-party investigator is looking into whether a young player in Martensville, Sask., shot video of another player showering and then posted it to social media, said Hockey Saskatchewan general manager Kelly McClintock.
McClintock said the Hockey Saskatchewan policy on cellphones is clear.
"Cellphones are only permitted to be used in a dressing room or dressing environment for the purposes of controlling music played in those spaces," it states on it website.
While the policy is clear, McClintock said the sheer number of teams and players can make enforcement problematic. There are upwards of 2,000 teams in the province.
"The younger the kids are, yes, there's more people in the dressing room," he said.
"But as the kids get to that U-11 and U-13 age where they're tying their own skates and doing their own things, there's less people."
Fewer people can mean less supervision and more opportunity for abuse, he said.
"I like to say that common sense applies, but sometimes, you know, common sense gets thrown out the window."
The independent investigation can take between one and four weeks. Depending on the outcome, the third party can take disciplinary steps or it can be referred back to Hockey Saskatchewan for action.
McClintock said that RCMP were contacted about the alleged incident, which the police force confirmed in an emailed statement. It says no charges have been laid and, "As this incident involves youth, we will not be providing further details at this time."
