Prisoner's note in Aldi shopper’s peg packet ‘won’t happen again’

An Aldi shopper got the surprise of her life after opening a packet of clothes pegs she’d recently purchased at the German retailer’s Special Buys sale.

Along with the 10 pegs by Aussie brand HEGS Pegs, she discovered a handwritten note inside the cardboard packaging from a prison inmate.

“Did anyone else buy these fantastic Aussie made pegs from ALDI last week and get a secret message inside the packaging?” the woman wrote in an ‘Aldi Mums’ Facebook group.

She uploaded a photo of the startling message written in capital letters in black pen.

“Mobilong Prison, Murray Bridge. Write me,” the prisoner scrawled, along with their name and ID number which have been obscured for privacy reasons.

Director of HEGS Pegs, Steven Thompson, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that a similar incident ‘will not happen again’.

“I recently purchased the HEGS Pegs brand and our Australian Made pegs are made in various factories throughout Adelaide,” he says.

“Other news articles have stated that HEGS are produced by Department of Correctional Services which is not correct.

“Some assembly and packaging does occur at the Department of Corrective services under a rehabilitation program.

“The ‘written note’ has been addressed and processes are in place to ensure this will not happen again.”

In a statement to Yahoo Lifestyle, a DCS spokesperson said:

“DCS encourages prisoners to keep in contact with family and friends through ways such as letter writing, phone calls and visits.

“Prisoners who have regular contact often experience greater wellbeing in prison, cope better on release and are less likely to reoffend.

“DCS is proud to support production for local company HEGS Pegs.”

Aldi is one of several major retailers in Australia that stocks HEGS Pegs.
