The Maginon is a vinyl turntable with a difference: actually, several differences. Currently an online exclusive Special Buy from Aldi that is on sale for a bargain £37.49 (down from£49.99), this deck could have you rekindling your love affair with vinyl records.

Even in these days of streaming music services, vinyl still holds a special place in our heart. Pundits tried to write it off in the eighties, when CDs made their debut, but it’s still exciting buyers today.

According to the BPI, the industry body that compiles sales charts, the appropriately named Disco by Kylie Minogue, was the most purchased 2020 release on vinyl. Sales are booming.

But then so are smart speakers. The fact is we like convenience, which is where this Maginon Turntable comes in.

Why we rate it

Not only is this a fully functional record deck, able to play albums, singles and 78s, it also has stereo speakers and amplification built-in, making it a retro-style all-in-one.

I can certainly see the appeal. Obviously these built-in speakers are limited in size and power, but the good news is that you can connect external speakers, for a bigger performance.

What’s more: you use it to copy your vinyl records directly onto a USB stick or memory card, in MP3 file format, so you can play then them on a PC or laptop.

The Maginon brand may not be that familiar, but this German outfit specialises in all manner of consumer electronics. In addition to turntables, they make everything from earbuds to e-scooters!

What the reviews say

Aldi buyers of this inexpensive turntable are suitably impressed, rating this crafty gadget 4.1 out of 5. Here's what shoppers have to say:

  • “Treated myself to this record player. Wow, what a bargain looks and sounds great.”

  • “Great value, looks brilliant and love that it has built-in speakers.”

  • “I absolutely love it. Not enough volume, but I will add a sound bar. Well pleased with it.”

  • “Bought this, as I don't want my huge stereo, but miss playing my records.”

  • "Wonderful combination of old fashioned technique rapped in high tech support. I was not quite sure of its audio reproduction but find it very acceptable as is. For the audiophiles there is the possibility of adding your own external speakers. Perhaps the nicest feature is the possibility of transferring the vinyl recordings onto a USB memory directly without any other device care of its high tech support. Great product."
