Watch the moment giant moth flaps around inside SEALED Woolworths salad

A Woolworths customer made a remarkable discovery inside a packet of spinach.

A video shared to Reddit on Friday shows an unopened bag of Woolworths-brand spinach with a live moth fluttering around inside.

"Massive live moth in unopened Spinach packet," Reddit user Discordant_Rhyme simply said.

It is not clear where the Reddit user purchased the bag of spinach. They later shared another video which proved the bag was unopened.

Many people on Reddit suggested the live moth indicated the produce was fresh.

"Woolies taking that whole 'fresh food people's thing to another level," one person said.

Another person said they would rather have a moth in a bag of greens, opposed to their food being covered in pesticides.

"No pesticides used or you would have a dead moth," one person suggested.

"I'd be happy that a moth could actually live in there. Just try to find the cocoon before you eat it because I seriously doubt it was a moth when it got bagged," another person said on Reddit.

Several people demanded the moth be released from the plastic bag immediately.

Woolworths responds to video

In a statement to Yahoo News Australia, a Woolworths spokesperson said food safety is paramount to the company.

"We treat food safety and quality seriously and would encourage the customer to contact their local store, so we can look into the matter with our supply partners," the spokesperson said.

"If ever our customers have any concerns about the quality of the product they receive, we encourage them to return it to their local store or contact our Customer Hub for a refund or replacement."
