The Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation was created to inspire girls and women across Australia to dream and achieve.
For the first eight years of my career I supported myself financially with no help from anyone. And it was tough.
To fund my overseas competitions I worked four jobs, leaving little time for surfing itself. Sixty hours of waiting tables, folding t-shirts and teaching rollerblading left just one hour for surfing, which wasn't the best regime for someone aiming to be World Champion.
I came to the realisation that you can't give your all to something when you're busy simply trying to get by. Mental and physical exhaustion is not a recipe for success. But I didn't give up.
I truly appreciate everything I have achieved because I worked so hard to get it. The Aim for the Stars Foundation was established so I could help talented young women not have to go through what I did.
And now my dream is to encourage, motivate and provide for all aspiring women and so the Foundation is an investment not just in individuals but, in the future of Australian women.
What we have found time and time again is that a little bit of finance and the knowledge that someone believes in their ambition, is all it takes for a young woman to achieve both personal greatness and happiness.
When we help one young woman, we help many. Our sisSTARs become an inspiration themselves, going on to mentor and motivate those that come after them.
