AFP targeting Italian mafia in Australia

A three-year undercover sting by the Australian Federal Police has lifted the lid on the extent of mafia operating in Australia.

* 51 Italian organised crime clans -- including 14 from the 'Ndrangheta

* 5000 mafioso members living in Australia

* The mafia supplies 70 to 80 per cent of the world's cocaine

* In Australia the mafia is also responsible for cannabis and methamphetamine trafficking

* The Calabrian mafia is working with other organised crime groups including bikie gangs and Asian or Middle Eastern crime groups to co-operate on drug importation, money laundering and violence

* Millions of dollars are laundered daily on behalf of illicit drug syndicates

* 'Ndrangheta use legitimate businesses, such as agricultural, restaurants and construction companies to launder proceeds of crime

* There were more than 1800 drug-induced deaths in Australia in 2020 - equivalent to about five a day
