Spotify has removed the shuffle button on all of its album pages in response to a request by Adele.

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter made the request to the streaming behemoth ahead of the release of her fourth studio album 30 this week.

By default, the site will now play through the tracks of an album in order — although users can of course still select individual tracks.

In the wake of the news, Adele tweeted her thanks to Spotify for listening to her wishes.

"This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry," she wrote to her 27 million Twitter followers.

Adele added: "We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason.

"Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening."

The official Spotify Twitter account responded with the words "anything for you", and Adele's music has certainly been a great success for the platform.

30 secured 60.7 million streams globally on the first day it was available, which is one of the biggest debuts in the history of the service.

Another huge female artist holds the top spot, with Taylor Swift accruing 90.8 million streams on the first day of release for Red (Taylor’s Version) earlier this month, breaking her own record.

Adele made 30 available on Spotify in tandem with its release on physical media and for digital download this week, marking a change of strategy from her previous album.

When 25 was released in 2015, it was not available to stream via Spotify for the first six months after it was first unveiled.

Swift, meanwhile, has had a contentious relationship with the streaming service, removing her albums from its catalogue for several years between 2014 and 2017.

She had raised issues with the royalties artists were paid in relation to how many times their work was streamed via Spotify.
