Adams says he wanted to look Mangione in the eye during perp walk
New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) briefly spoke with Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, upon his arrival in New York for an arraignment.
“I wanted to send a strong message with the police commissioner that we’re leading from the front. I’m not going to just allow him to come into our city,” Adams said during a Thursday interview with PX11 News.
“I wanted to look him in the eye to say that, ‘You carried out this terrorist act in my city, the city that the people of New York love,’ and I wanted to be there to show the symbolism of that,” he added.
Federal prosecutors brought four new charges against Mangione for the shooting in midtown Manhattan. Mangione is facing additional state charges in New York and Pennsylvania.
