Adam Peaty addresses his mum's 'Strictly Come Dancing' 'fix' comment

Watch: Adam Peaty comments on mum's 'total fix' claim after his Strictly exit

Adam Peaty has spoken out after his mum said Strictly was a “total fix” following his exit, saying she had just wanted him to do a paso.

The Olympic swimmer and his professional partner Katya Jones became the sixth couple to be voted off the BBC dance contest on Sunday night after being placed at the bottom of the leaderboard by the judges, with a score of 27/40.

And his mum Caroline later tweeted: "Total fix and I’m not buying the public vote."

Addressing her remarks on BBC Breakfast, Peaty said his mum just wanted to see him dance a paso doble and that he didn't feel he deserved to still be in the competition.

He told presenter Charlie Stayt: “I agree with you, mums are always going to support their own. She wanted to see me every Saturday night – you know how mums get, bless her.

“I love her to bits, she loves me to bits. I think she just wanted me to do a paso (doble), that’s all she wanted to see me do… for me, if anyone can lose well it’s me, and everyone in that competition, they are incredible people, and I’m glad I’m out because I don’t deserve to be there."

Peaty went on: “Some of the dancers are just… my jaw is dropping and I will always get behind everyone on the show and so, you know what, that’s incredible, that’s different for me because normally I’m on my own and go, you know, ‘You’re not beating me today’, but this is different…”

Presenter Naga Munchetty asked the 26-year-old if he’d “had words” with his mum about her remark.

“Well, yeah… but you know, again, it is the way it is, isn’t it?” he replied.

“I don’t want to censor anyone… she’s got her thoughts and I’ve got mine, and my thought is the most important one to me, is that I had the most incredible time and everyone on that show deserves to be there.”

Days after Caroline's comment, the BBC debunked claims the ballroom contest shows favouritism to BBC talent.

Statistics showed that eight of the crowned winners over the programme’s 18 series were BBC stars.

The high frequency with which personalities tied with the broadcaster seem to triumph is also influenced by the fact that around 39% of the stars who have hit the Strictly dancefloor have worked for the BBC.

"The winner of Strictly is decided by the public vote," they said.
