Accused kidnapper to face Queensland court

A man who allegedly kidnapped a 12-year-old boy for ransom is due to face a Gold Coast court later today.

Zhen Jie Zhang, 53, was extradited to Queensland from NSW after facing Grafton Local Court on Monday.

Zhang was interviewed by Queensland police on Monday night and is expected to face one charge of kidnap for ransom.

The boy, who was snatched outside his Gold Coast home on Friday afternoon, has been reunited with his family after he was found by police in Grafton, over 200km south of his home less than 24 hours later.

Zhang was allegedly in the car when the boy was located.

The boy did not attend Somerset College in Mudgeeraba on Monday but the school’s headmaster told media the school would love to see him back after a “stressful and disturbing weekend”.

Police say the alleged kidnapper had fallen out with the boy’s family over “substantial” personal loans which prompted the extortion attempt.

Queensland police have refused to comment on media reports a second person was in the car when the boy was abducted.
