A man charged over the death of two children in a three-car crash in Melbourne is likely to remain in hospital for a fortnight, a court has been told.

Damian Tiahaiere Rakatau, 41, is charged with culpable driving causing the death of Ruana Panicker, 10, at Truganina at about midnight on Saturday.

He faces the same charge over the death of a four-year-old boy, named by media as the girl's brother Immanuel George Panicker, who later died in hospital.

The 41-year-old is also charged with negligently causing the serious injury of Manju Vaurghese, reported to be the children's mother.

Rakatau remains in hospital after the crash where he is likely to remain for about two weeks, Melbourne Magistrates Court was told on Friday.

Police earlier alleged the crash occurred when he overtook a car before colliding with another.

The matter was adjourned for a committal mention on November 13 to allow time for toxicology results, a vehicle examination and reconstruction of the collision.
