ABC’s medical expert Dr Norman Swan has been tested for coronavirus.

Dr Swan is self-isolating after developing symptoms of the virus, according to the ABC.

"OK so now I have to admit I'm at home because I do have symptoms and after I finish this I'm going to get tested," he told ABC News Radio on Monday.

The highly respected medical communicator is the presenter of the Health Report on Radio National and has been running a daily coronavirus podcast on the ABC.

It it unclear under what criteria Dr Swan was tested as he said to his knowledge he was not in contact with anyone who had a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Dr Swan has been making daily media appearances since the outbreak hit Australian shores and it appears he will continue to do so from isolation.

Justine Stevens, the executive producer of the ABC’s 7:30 program tweeted this afternoon that Dr Swan “will still be doing his regular 7:30 segment tonight and recording it from home.”

It’s expected the test results will take a day or two to come through.
