Commonwealth Games athlete hits back at criticism over baby photo

Olympian Dame Valerie Adams has hit back at criticism of a photo she shared holding her baby on a Gold Coast balcony at the Commonwealth Games.

Fans took to social media last week revealing how the celebratory image of the shot putter holding her six-month-old daughter Kimoana left them feeling "anxious".

The 33-year-old New Zealander responded to comments over the safety of her baby on Thursday, insisting she wasn't at risk.

"Kimoana is in safe hands," she said in the image's Instagram caption.

She also included the hashtags #calmthefarm #enjoytheview and #moveon, looking to put the furore created by some comments behind her.

She had initially shared the picture to her Facebook and Instagram pages last week of the pair high in the Gold Coast skyline.

"Happy 6 months my baby girl. I love you more then you’ll ever know. Our journey so far has been incredibly amazing but tough," she originally captioned the picture.

However, even though most of the comments were of support and congratulations, some said the photo made them feel uneasy but the baby's proximity to the balcony edge.

"Can you move to the right a lil (sic) more, you're making me nervous," one person wrote.

Others agreed the height of the balcony out of the high rise building made them anxious.

"This gives me anxiety that you're standing so close to the rail and you're so high up," one said.

The majority of the comments were supportive of the New Zealand Olympian and the baby girl.

"Beautiful photo of a strong woman and a precious daughter. You are an inspiration to so many Dame Val," one fan said.
