'Our Angel is flying high': Devastated parents in shock after girl, 2, killed in house fire
The devastated parents of a little girl who died in a house fire this morning have said their daughter, named Angel, is tonight flying high.
Colleen Waylan and her partner Paul lost their two-year-old when the family's home burned to the ground.
The weatherboard home in Capertee, in New South Wales' Blue Mountains, caught alight shortly before 8am on Saturday.
Colleen and Paul did manage to save their two other children, but sadly – despite running back into the burning home – Angel couldn't be saved.
"By that stage unfortunately they were unable to get back into the dwelling because of the intensity of the fire," Detective Chief Inspector Luke Rankin said.
Neighbours tried to help.
"My husband ran straight out, tore up here in his car but he couldn't do anything," a witness told 7 News.
It was a member of the public driving past on his way to work who first noticed the smoke.
He contacted emergency services immediately, who are stationed less than a kilometre from the property, but the fire was so savage by the time they had arrived there was little they could do.
The home was already destroyed.
The small, tight-knit community is in shock following the house fire tragedy.
"We've called our chaplain to the scene and ongoing support for those people," Inspector Ron Gavin from NSW Ambulance said.
