Bag emblazoned with 'bomb' sparks airport security scare

Passengers at Brisbane Airport have been left stunned after a suspicious item of luggage emblazoned with the word 'bomb' made its way along a baggage carousel.

Travellers alighted from a flight from Singapore on Wednesday morning before making their way through airport security.

As they went to collect their luggage, one female passenger spotted the suspicious item next to her suitcase.

"It was with a whole bunch of bags and I just saw the word 'bomb'," the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Yahoo7 News.

She said the bag, which read "Bomb to Brisbane" below the passenger's name, had left her stumped, unsure of what it actually was.

"I didn’t know what to make of it to be honest, I thought it may have been a joke," the passenger said.

"But when I saw the police officers come over then I realised it was a bit more serious."

The passenger revealed officers rushed to scene after they were alerted to the bag by another traveller.

"The area was cordoned and we were quickly ushered on away from it," she said.

The passenger revealed her disbelief how the bag managed to make its way through security with bomb written on it.

"How it made it all the way is beyond me, you’ve got to be pretty thick to do that," she said.

Written underneath "Bomb to Brisbane" is the Indian city of Mumbai, where it is believed the owner of the bag embarked on her journey to Brisbane.

The code for Mumbai International Airport is BOM. Mumbai was officially named Bombay until 1995 when it changed to its current name.

An Australian Federal Police spokesperson told Yahoo7 News the AFP responded to an incident after being alerted to the item.

"The Australian Federal Police responded to reports of a suspicious item of baggage at Brisbane International Airport this morning," the spokesperson said.

"An area near a baggage carousel was cordoned off and the item was examined in accordance with routine protocols, and was not deemed to be suspicious."

A Mumbai International Airport spokesperson confirmed to Yahoo7 News that the passenger referred to Mumbai as “BOMB” when writing the departing airport on her luggage.
