Father's injuries ‘consistent with a car crash’ after brutal bashing

A distraught father says he thought he was going to die when he was savagely beaten in Melbourne’s south-east, with injuries consistent with a serious car crash.

Police are now on the hunt for the three thugs who left him with a shattered leg and severe facial injuries.

As reported by 3AW radio's Neil Mitchell program, Shannon Amendola was walking from the pub to the bus stop along Lonsdale Street, Dandenong at 7.30 last Thursday night, when he was attacked.

But the violent gang didn't steal anything from him.

He described being “bashed, stomped, kicked, punched, hit with poles,” during the attack.

The dad has a fractured nose, has lost a number of teeth and his femur is shattered.

“It is literally crushed to dust. I've been told from doctors that only happens from a car accident,” he told 7 News.

Mr Amendola needed surgery on his leg and has spent the past six days in hospital. He expects the road to recovery will be a long one.

“Probably about six to nine months before I'm back at work and I'm mentally scarred for the rest of my life.”

He fought back tears as he told 7 News he can't bear to tell his three-year-old what happened.

"It's killing me... I don't want her to see me like this and I won't tell her I was savagely beaten."

Police believe three men are responsible for the attack. They have described one as African, who was wearing a high visibility fluorescent vest. The other two are believed to be Caucasian.

No one has been arrested in relation to the incident, so Mr Amendola is pleading with those involved to own up.

“Hand yourself in. Do the right thing.”
