Thieves found empty homes by 'door-knocking' in six-day crime spree
A door-to-door crime spree across Melbourne has left homes trashed and families worried they'll be burgled again.
Police say thieves went door-knocking through Montmorency, Greensborough and Kew. If someone was home, the gang just walked away, but when they found empty homes they broke in.
Stephen and wife Angela's Montmorency home was one of five burgled by the same gang over the past six days.
He found his home ransacked when he returned from taking his grandson to the pool on Thursday morning.
The thieves allegedly targeted well-known hiding spots for valuables, including lifting beds up to check the mattresses and bases.
“It was just so slick, so professional, but so vicious," he told 7 News.
"Their lack of care - they smashed wedding photos and frames.
“They've stuck their boot into this. It's knocked the door off the hinges. It looks like they've gone, upstairs office, upstairs bedroom, and our master bedroom.”
“This is wrong, what they are doing. And I am just sick of it,” Stephen said.
It's hard to find humour in a wrecked family home, but Stephen still managed to have a laugh.
"They stole my whiskey, and left my wife's gin. That's just not fair," he joked.
The crime spree started six days ago. All up, the men allegedly broke into five homes, including in Doncaster and Keilor East. In Malvern they stole two cars, then led officers on a chase from Balwyn to Epping Plaza, according to police.
Police arrested a 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds, and a 28-year-old man at Epping on Thursday morning.
