'It makes sense': Coke launches its first alcoholic drink

One of the most best-known brands in the world will launch its first alcoholic beverage in its 125-year history.

Drinks giant Coca-Cola will experiment with a canned beverage called Chu-Hi, made up of distilled Japanese drink shochu, sparkling water and flavouring.

Shochu is a distilled liquor that can be quite potent on its own but the new Coke beverage will typically have between 3-8 per cent alcohol by volume.

A senior Coca-Cola executive said the move was a "modest experiment for a specific slice of our market".

"We haven't experimented in the low alcohol category before, but it's an example of how we continue to explore opportunities outside our core areas," Japanese president, Jorge Garduno, said.

Mr Garduno said the alcoholic Coca-Cola drink is likely to only be released in Japan for now rather than expanding globally due to the “unique and special” qualities of the Japanese market, meaning it's unlikely to come to Australia.

“The Chu-Hi category is found almost exclusively in Japan. Globally, it’s not uncommon for non-alcoholic beverages to be sold in the same system as alcoholic beverages,” Mr Garduno said.

“It makes sense to give this a try in our market.”

A Coca-Cola Australia spokesperson told Yahoo7 News there "no plans" to release the product locally as it's very specific to the Japanese market.

"No, we have no plans to do it here - it's very much a Japan thing," they said in a statement.
