Dramatic rescue of elderly woman trapped in floodwaters for two hours

An elderly woman has been rescued after enduring two hours trapped in a car when it was swept into rising floodwaters on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Dramatic footage shows the moment the woman was winched to safety by rescue teams who worked effortlessly to save her life on Tuesday afternoon northwest of Taree.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was a passenger in a white 4WD which was swept into the flooded creek as the car tried to cross a causeway.

The vehicle's female driver, in her 60s, managed to free herself and swim to safety before emergency services arrived.

Both women were taken to hospital for further assessment.

Police are urging drivers to take extra care amid torrential rain and to avoid flooded roads at all costs.
