Why Kmart was forced to recall a faulty product for a second time

Kmart has explained why it was forced to recall two popular faulty products for the second time in a few months.

The Australian retail giant last week issued an urgent recall warning customers to not use two popular items out of fear they could cause “fire or explosion”.

The retailer issued the recall Friday for its Jackeroo and Active & Co camping stoves purchased between November 2015 and May 2017.

The alert issued on the company’s Facebook page was sent out “due to an issue with the manufacturing”.

Kmart warned there were known issues with “instances of gas leakage” from the camping stoves that could lead to “fire or explosion”.

“Hi everyone, we would like to make you aware of a product safety recall we currently have on 2 of our Portable single burner stoves (Model No. PL-222; active & Co and Jackeroo) purchased between November 2015 — May 2017,” it read.

Customers were told to “cease using this product immediately” and return it to a Kmart store for a full refund.

Following news of the risks of the stoves just days ago, customers were keen to find out why the alert was raised following a recall of the same products just six months ago.

Kmart confirmed to Yahoo7 on Sunday the second alert was the same product on recall from September last year and it was reissued because relatively few customers returned the items after the first notice.

"At Kmart the safety of our customers is our absolute priority," a Kmart spokesperson said in a statement to Yahoo7.

"Back in September 2017 we issued a recall notice for the portable single burner stove, however due to a low return rate we have reissued the recall notice to continue to bring awareness.

"If any customer has the portable single burner stove please return this product to the store for a full refund."

“If you have any questions, please call our customer service team on 1800 124 125,” Kmart advised.

The recall comes in the same week as the federal government announced the compulsory recall of 2.3 million cars nationwide due to faulty and dangerous Takata airbags.
