Student's terrifying texts to her mum as teacher opened fire at school

A mother has revealed a series of terrifying text messages her daughter sent while hiding in a classroom after a teacher opened fire on campus.

Annmarie Jacobs received the first message from her daughter, Emma, just before 11am on Wednesday (local time).

"We're under a threat attack thing," the message read.

"Like it's real."

Emma was hiding with her school mates in a dark classroom at Dalton High School in Georgia, US after reports of gunfire in the building.

The drama came just two weeks after 17 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida

"What do you mean, Emma?" Ms Jacobs replied to her daughter.

"A teacher locked hisself [sic] in a room or something and he was freaking out yelling and stuff," Emma's reply read.

In another classroom, social studies teacher Jesse Randal Davidson, 53, had barricaded himself inside, and fired a gunshot when the principal tried to force open the door.

In a desperate attempt to contact her daughter, Ms Jacobs continued to text and call Emma.

"Wait mommy I'm not supposed to be on my phone," Emma replied.

"He has a gun. People are saying he's holding kids in his room but idk."

After repeated attempts to phone her daughter, Ms Jacobs pleaded with Emma to answer the phone.

"Mommy I can't. There can't be any talking," Emma wrote.

"The swat team is here."

The incident at the school, situated about 145km north of Atlanta, began when a group of students tried to enter a classroom and found that their teacher would not let them in, Bruce Frazier of the Dalton Police Department said.

Police confirmed that no one was seriously injured but it created a frightening situation for the school just two weeks after the Florida school massacre.

In response to that tragedy, carried out by a former student, US President Donald Trump said teachers should carry concealed firearms on school campuses.
