Warning about common household items after pet dog found dead

A dog owner kissed her pet goodbye but when she returned later in the day her beloved pet had died from a common household item.

Christina Young shared a heartbreaking post online, saying her partner arrived home about ten minutes before her one evening last week but he was not greeted by their pit bull Petey like normal.

Instead he made the distressing discovery.

"As he walked in further he saw our sweet boy laying lifeless with a stupid chip bag over his head," Ms Young wrote.

The woman from Texas believes the pit bull was able to reach up and grab the packet from the counter.

"We will forever blame ourselves for it leaving out," she wrote.

Ms Young shared the story about her pet's death in the hope her gut-wrenching tale will prevent others from experiencing the same heartache.

"He ate every chip out but of course went back for crumbs... with there being nothing left inside every time he would go for more he would inhale making the bag tighter & tighter around his head... ultimately resulting in suffocation," the woman believed.

According to the Preventive Vet website this type of death is not uncommon, explaining that devastating suffocation can occur with a number of items including cereal bags, snack bags, pet food bags, household containers and resealable bags.

"The most likely culprits are soft, collapsible, crinkly plastic or mylar-type bags that contain (or have contained) salty, sugary or fatty snacks and foods," the website reads.

Preventive Vet says it can take less than five minutes for these tragedies to occur.

Veterinarian Jason Nicholas urges people to cut up food storage packets before they are thrown out, WFSB reports.

Ms Young hopes that others will think twice before leaving bags within a pet's reach, and says to cherish every moment with pets.

"I just ask that in honour of my boy Petey that you be extra careful, warn other dog owners & give your fur babies some extra love today and everyday after this," she said.
