The code that reveals if your car's airbags are faulty

Australians wondering whether their car is one of the 2.3 million vehicles listed for a compulsory recall over faulty Takata airbags need to check the vehicle's 17-digit identification number.

On Wednesday, the federal government announced the compulsory recall of 2.3 million vehicles due to problems with faulty Takata airbags that have caused at least 23 deaths worldwide.

The government intervention, one of the country's biggest ever consumer recalls, follows consultations with affected manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

Vehicles made by Ford, GM Holden, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda have been added to the recall list to replace faulty airbags. Similar action has taken place around the world.

How to tell if you're affected

Affected cars are on the compulsory recall list, which can be found down the bottom of the this article.

The ACCC announced certain models from Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Ford, Holden, Tesla, Jaguar and Land Rover will be added to the recall campaign once more information becomes available but the list of exact models are yet to be released by the manufacturers.

To find out if your vehicle specifically is on the recall list you will need to know your vehicle identification number [(VIN)](VIN).

The VIN is a unique 17-character serial number that can be found on your vehicle or in documentation such as rego.

Using your VIN, you can contact the manufacturer of your vehicle or if the brand has added a VIN checker to their website you can check there to see if your car if affected.

It's important to take care in noting your VIN, and enter it carefully when searching databases and lists. Entering an incorrect VIN will give you incorrect information about your vehicle.

What if your car isn't under active recall?

If your vehicle is not currently under active recall, it is important to check again in the future as recall action may be initiated for your vehicle later. You should ensure that your manufacturer has your current contact details so that they can notify you if needed.

Your vehicle manufacturer is required to publish a recall initiation schedule and searchable recall database on their website by July 1, 2018.

The recall database will allow you to check the recall status of your vehicle by searching for its VIN, and the recall initiation schedule provides the dates of all recalls, active and future.

Future recall means that your airbag will be replaced in the future, at the time specified in the manufacturer’s recall initiation schedule.

What happens now?

Manufacturers, dealers, importers and other suppliers will be required to locate and replace Takata airbags in a staggered recall by December 31, 2020.

Recall notices will indicate and fit into three categories of severity: critical, active and future.

Car owners are urged to check the Product Safety Australia website or their vehicle manufacturer's website to see if the recall applies to them.

VOLUNTARY RECALL LIST
The voluntary recall list redistributed by the ACCC on February 28. The list will be added to as additional carmakers identify the models impacted.
