Disabled granddad says his $140k lottery win ‘ruined’ his life

A disabled grandad who scooped $140,000 on the lottery has spoken of his horror after being left with nothing following his windfall.

Daniel Millar, 63, from Motherwell, Scotland, says he blew his September winnings in just a few weeks on luxury holidays and presents for his family.

But his biggest mistake was not declaring his newfound fortune to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) who in turn significantly cut back his benefits when they found out from the Tax Office he initially had the extra money in his bank.

“It’s a nightmare. I don’t know what I can do and I don’t where to turn to," he told the Daily Record.

Alongside his wife Bridget, 63, his full-time carer, the pair are now forced to live off $1,070 a month between them after his misunderstanding claiming they "didn't know" he had to let the DWP know.

“The DWP have said we aren’t entitled to any money. They say that we have deprived ourselves of capital and don’t qualify for the benefits," Bridget said.

Mr Millar, a former security guard who suffers from long-term health problems, is left with his personal independence payment of $620 per month and a pension of $1.70 per week.

He is left paying full rent and council tax while Bridget receives just $110 each week and is left footing all their bills including gas, electric and phone.

“There are people winning millions of pounds and we just get a bit of luck and all of a sudden, we are punished for it," Bridget added.
