A Perth man has accidentally run himself over with the vehicle he was allegedly trying to steal.

The driver fell out of the moving car in St James on Friday afternoon, and somehow ended up under it.

Slumped and bleeding after the car ran over him, a witness found the injured man on a chair in his front yard.

"He had, like the knuckle on his ankle missing, and his chest was all caved," Shane Taylor told 7 News.

The man, believed to be aged in his 40s, ran to Mr Taylor's home begging for help.

Mr Taylor said the suspect pleaded: "Don't let me die".

Police say the injured man accidentally ran himself over with a car he tried to steal from nearby Ellam Street.

The owner of the car says he had pulled up to the side of the road to have a look at some items left out for household rubbish collection.

He was just metres away when the alleged thief jumped into the driver's seat.

He slammed on the accelerator and reversed, leaving a burnout on the road and a plume of smoke in the air.

The vehicle's owner tried to grab the man through a car window, but the alleged thief panicked and jumped out the passenger side.

The suspect is hospital with serious leg injuries.

Charges have not yet been laid.
